BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- A project is underway to enhance the quality of service for the non-commercial side of the greater Binghamton Airport. Demolition of the airport's fifteen "T hangars" began Wednesday morning.

It is the beginning of a project that will not only replace the aging buildings with newer construction, but also allow for a 25 percent increase in the number of private aircraft that the airport can house. More than 50 percent of local air traffic is non-commercial, and Aviation Commissioner Carl Beardsley says that these improvements are vital to keeping that business in the region.

"In order to keep this customer base strong at Binghamton we have to replace aging infrastructure that they use and one component of this infrastructure is the T hangars that we have behind us, and as you can see, they are aging," said Carl Beardsley, Aviation Commissioner.

$600,000 of the $745,000 project is paid for by New York State grants. The project is expected to be completed by mid-December.
