DICKINSON, N.Y. -- Broome Community College students are speaking out about proposed changes to Broome County Transit. County Executive Debbie Preston's 2013 budget calls for a 50 cent raise in bus fares, as well as a modified pass structure.

A group of students and community members gathered on the campus Wednesday to send a message to the County Executive. The protesters say they can't afford a price increase, and they point out that without transportation it would become difficult for students to finish their Associate’s Degrees.

"Going to increase the fare from $1.50 to $2.00, that ain't right. An increase in the unlimited fare, that ain't right for students. Why? Because we got bills to pay," said Aaron Rodriguez, a BCC student.

"I can't afford to come to class. How am I supposed to complete my Associate's Degree if I can't get here?" asked Kelly Gill, a BCC student.

The County Executive pointed out that the county has been working to add back routes that were cut in the 2012 budget. She also says that the county needs to increase rates to help pay for things such as fuel costs, new buses, and maintenance.
