Thousands of dirt car racing fans across the Northeast may consider this week to be the biggest week of the year for the popular sport. Super Dirt Week 41 at the New York State Fairgrounds is underway and more than 100,000 people are expected through the weekend. Our Brad Vivacqua has more on the big event.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- This is known as the Super Bowl of dirt car racing. A number of RVs and campers started setting up near the track on Wednesday.

Events include trials and qualifying races both today and tomorrow with some big races Saturday and Sunday. The competitions will lead to the prestigious finale, the 200-mile VP Small Engine Fuels Championship on Sunday.

Super Dirt Week is well attended by people from across the country and Canada who follow the sport. We caught up with some people setting up campers and purchasing tickets for the big weekend. Many of the racing fans we spoke to say they've been coming back for years.

“Just recently, we all got campers, we used to rent a motel over here, we all got campers, we can stay right here. It's a family event as you can see, there's a lot of kids, their wives are here. It's just a fantastic time, we all look forward to it,” said Steve Gigliotti, dirt car racing fan.

"Dirt racing, this is the Super Bowl here. Usually everyone has their things at the beginning of the year. Daytona 500 they have theirs at the end of the year and this brings people from Canada, New Jersey, everywhere," said Paul Guererri, dirt car racing fan.

One of the reasons fans say they keep coming back is the fairgrounds' historic one mile track which, is larger than most other tracks.

Between 100,000 and 120,000 people are expected through the weekend.
