ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The month of October has many people and organizations getting the word out about the dangers of breast cancer. The Onondaga County Health Department wants the public to be aware of a program it offers year round.

The county provides free mammograms for women between the ages of 40 and 64 who don't have health insurance or whose providers don't cover the test. It's a program that's been taking place since the 1980s at private health care facilities.

The county says being proactive is the best way to protect yourself.

"The American Cancer Society reports that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. So that's a pretty astounding statistic. We do know that routine screenings are the best way to catch breast cancer early," said Emily Young, a public health educator.
