ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- More than 100 students from local high schools and community colleges are learning all about manufacturing and the need for skilled workers in the industry. As part of a nation-wide celebration for manufacturing companies, the Manufacturers Association of Central New York held a Manufacturing Careers Day at the East Syracuse company INFICON Friday morning.

This annual event serves as an opportunity for the students to visit manufacturing companies in the area and to hear about the benefits of working in the sector.

Organizers of the event say manufacturing has changed greatly from what it once was, because now it's more focused on science, technology, engineering and math.

"Every career will involve technology. Every career will have science, engineering and math, but especially in manufacturing. And again, that's where the growth is, both in nationally and locally. So, young people need to be prepared for that and really some exciting careers as well,” said Randy Wolken, MACNY President.

Wolken says these types of manufacturing jobs pay significantly more than some other careers out there, but they've had a hard time finding people to fill the positions because of a lack of skills.
