DICKINSON, N.Y. -- The rain didn't keep people inside on Saturday in Broome County, a good crowd showed up at Otsiningo Park for the Southern Tier Surgical Clinic's 4th annual Physical Whimsical Walk and Run. The event aims to prevent childhood obesity and raise money for the Stay Healthy Kids Program.
Organizers said the event gets bigger and better every year. Binghamton was recently ranked number two in the nation for obesity. Now, planners want to help the city become the healthiest area instead. They said obesity in children can lead to other diseases.
"Obesity is usually associated with type two diabetes, which is an adult onset disease. Now that's showing up in teenagers and adolescents, we're not going in the right direction," said Mickey McCabe, event coordinator.
New York's obesity rate is now up to 25 percent.
