SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Some of Central New York's best young cheerleaders hit the mat at the War Memorial in Syracuse to show off their skills. The annual Cheer Fest and Competition kicked off the day on Sunday with the youngest Pop Warner members performing their routines.
Kids ranging in age from 5 to 9, entertained the crowd, and no scores were kept. However, the event turned more serious throughout the afternoon, with dozens of older squads competing to come out on top. Organizers said cheerleading takes a wide variety of skills.
"There's an incorporation of a number of skills, from stunting, to tumbling, to jumping, to dance. All of those things combine to make a two-and-a-half minute routine," explained Ginny Marasco, CNY Pop Warner Cheer Commissioner.
The teams with the top scores in the competition move on to face squads from around the state in the regional qualifier.
