NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. -- A benefit was held on Sunday to help a child coping with a tragedy. Three months ago, Kylie Turczyn, 23, was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, Thomas Anderson, 27. Investigators said he turned the gun on himself, taking his own life.
But, what makes this tragedy even worse, is that their young daughter witnessed the entire scenario. On Sunday, a benefit was held in Turczyn's honor, to raise money for an education trust fund for Gabriella, 4. Family members said that with October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this was the right time to hold their event.
"That's actually why we chose October to do the benefit in, to raise a little awareness about domestic violence, and what it's about. Get a little exposure out there, and let woman know there's always somebody they can go to, and go to call for help," said Kimberly Artessa, Kylie's aunt.
Representatives from the YWCA attended the benefit to provide information for domestic violence victims, or family members of a victim.
