CANASTOTA, N.Y. -- A local candle company competing in a national contest has won the hearts of the crowd.

The Martha Stewart Made in America Contest announced Monday that The Bee Man Candle Company of Madison County is the Audience Choice Award Winner.

Brian Howell and his family specialize in making hand crafted beeswax and bayberry candles from a warehouse in the Village of Canastota. His company and product were selected as finalists at the end of August and were up for voting for most the month of September.

Howell and his family will receive a $10,000 prize and will be featured in Martha Stewart Living Magazine.

The contest, which celebrates the creativity of small business owners from across the country, had a total of 100 finalists. The Bee Man Candle Company was the lone Central New York finalist in the contest.
