HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Frankfort and Ilion Fire Departments paired up for an open house and fire safety event on Wednesday.
The event was a fun and relaxed way for families and their children to learn very serious lessons about fire safety and how to be prepared, especially in their homes.
"We tell folks that they need to have working smoke alarms in conjunction with a plan of escape," said Frankfort Fire Chief Chuck Conigliaro. “We're well prepared when we go to a hotel or an unfamiliar place, they plan that for us. And we're least prepared in our own homes."
Fifteen- to 18-year-olds were also given the chance to complete a combat challenge, where they performed an obstacle course while wearing all the necessary equipment.
Other state and local police and emergency agencies were also at the event to promote citizen preparedness for all kinds of emergencies.
