ROME, N.Y. -- After five years of no tax hikes in Rome, that streak has come to an end. The mayor delivered his budget address last week, which included the possibility of a 5.7 percent tax hike for residents outside the city tax district. Those within the limits would pay 3.9 percent more.

A public hearing on the budget was held Wednesday night. City common council members assured residents that much work is still to be done. The hearing will help them receive input from the people to guide them in the decision process.

"Tonight we talked about spreading the word through neighborhood watch meetings, and forums and we encourage the public to get in touch with their councilors so that we can make an educated decision when it comes time to vote on the budget," said Common Councilor Frank Anderson.

While reviewing the budget, councilors say they're speaking with department heads about where cuts can be made to avoid the tax hike.
