OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- The dredging of the channel connecting Sandy Pond to Lake Ontario started in early summer, but residents and business owners in the area say it's not helping.
Sandy Pond Channel Maintenance Associated started dredging the single waterway entrance. But shifting currents are piling sand into the channel faster than it can be dredged.
Now, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help and "offer any resources available to address this issue." She says the sand buildup is preventing boaters from entering and exiting Sandy Pond, decreasing tourism in the area and causing concerns over public safety.
