OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Oswego County legislature has approved an additional $250,000 to cover out of county inmate boarding costs. It's another round of funding for a program that is well over budget for the year.

The jail holds 169 people and if there is overflow, those inmates are sent to other counties. Right now, 14 are being housed elsewhere at a cost of $90 per day, per inmate.

A total of $100,000 was originally budgeted for boarding costs for the year. But by year's end, the price tag is expected to come in at more than a million dollars.

At its peak, the jail was housing 50 inmates in other facilities, but officials have been able to lower that number by sharing resources with other departments. That process has enabled them to move cases through the courts more efficiently so they have a better handle of the number of inmates they need to house at any given time.

"The Sheriff's office has a booking software program. That has now been made available to the District Attorney's office and the Probation Department, where they're able to actually see in real time our booking numbers, the number of inmates we have, who's in jail on what charge and how long they've been there," said Oswego County Undersheriff Eugene Sullivan.

The legislature also approved an additional $80,000 in funding to cover inmate medical costs, which include doctor’s visits, surgeries and Medicine.
