CANTON, N.Y. -- The St. Lawrence County Deputies Association speaks out on proposed budget cuts that would eliminate the sheriff's road patrol.

The deputies said Friday that they provide vital services to the county that could not be made up anywhere else.

Among those services are responding to 911 calls, drug task force investigations, and pistol permit fingerprinting.

The cuts were proposed earlier in the week by county legislator Fred Morrill in an effort to bring the tax increase under the tax cap limit.

The Deputies Association says Morrill's cuts are hypocritical.

"He told me if there is a burglary in his neighborhood, he calls the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's office. Myself, I feel then that our jobs are more than justified," said Sean O'Brien, president of the St. Lawrence County Deputies Association.

When YNN spoke with Morrill earlier in the week he said he wasn't necessarily in favor the cuts, rather, he just wanted them to be on the table.

The original proposed budget included a 19-percent tax increase.
