ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca police officer shot by a suspect last week has suffered a minor stroke. He remains in the intensive care unit.

According to Deputy Chief John Barber, Officer Anthony Augustine suffered a collapsed lung when he was shot. Now the stroke has impaired his vision and he's lost some function in his arm and hand.

Augustine was shot Thursday evening while he was chasing a man suspected of stealing a car. Police say the suspect turned and shot Augustine in the chest while running.

Investigators arrested Jamel Booker, 22, and charged him with aggravated assault of an officer and criminal use of a firearm.

The deputy chief says it's unknown whether Augustine will fully recover.
