Camillus man claims winnings on lottery ticket six years later

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- An Onondaga County man claims a $5 million prize, six years after scratching off the winning lottery ticket.

New York Lottery officials say Andy Ashkar, 34, of Camillus, purchased the scratch-off in 2006 at the Green Ale Market on East Fayette Street in Syracuse, which his parents own. He ended up winning the top prize in the $500 million Extravaganza scratch-off game, but he waited until this March to redeem the prize.

Ashkar says he didn't want his lucky fortune to affect his engagement and marriage. He will be splitting the prize with his brother Nayel as a sign of appreciation.
