SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A church on Syracuse's west side had to turn away dozens of hungry people after its food pantry was damaged during a burglary.

Officials at the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church say a deacon discovered that the building was broken into early Tuesday morning. It appears that the suspect or suspects broke in through a back window and then rummaged through the food pantry, destroying much of it in the process.

Each Tuesday and Thursday, the church hosts a lunch for disadvantaged members of the community, but many were left without a hot meal as the church had to cancel the event.

"We may have to even cancel it on Thursday, but I'm praying to God that we're up and operating by Thursday, to go back to our pattern of being able to serve the community," said Rev. Dr. L. Micah O. Dexter II, Pastor at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church.

And those who would like to help the pantry get back to usual, you can call the church for more information on donations at (315) 807-3413. And anyone who may have information on the crime is encouraged to call Syracuse Police at (315) 442-5222.
