BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- One of the big issues in the Broome County Executive race has been the future of the county's nursing home.

County Executive Debbie Preston's proposed budget calls for privatizing Willow Point nursing home. Tuesday, she spent the day talking with senior citizens.

Despite the uncertain future of Willow Point, Preston reassured people that the county will stay in the nursing home business. A task force has been looking at options for the past year.

Preston said, “There's always that safety net for those who can't afford the private nursing homes or they can't afford to pay, my mom was one of those. You have to make sure because families worry, where are they going to get the best care."

"There's a lot of rhetoric and promises made by my opponent. That she's a strong friend to seniors but if you look at the record actions speak louder. She started privatizing our county nursing home. She's in her first budget eliminated funding for the senior home repair program," said Broome County Executive candidate Tarik Abdelazim.

Both candidates have agreed to a debate on Wednesday, October 25th.
