SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- People hit the streets in the city of Syracuse to protest hydrofracking. Health professionals were part of the demonstration calling for an independent health review of fracking.

A handful of people were holding up signs in front of the Regional Department of Health office on Salina Street Wednesday.

Hydrofracking uses water, chemicals and sand to reach natural gas deposits underground. Supporters say it will create jobs. Opponents say it will hurt the environment.

Governor Cuomo has asked for an internal health review of fracking within his own administration. Protesters say that doesn't go far enough. To make their point demonstrators pointed to the Department of Health's vision.

New Yorkers will be the healthiest people in the world, living in communities that promote health, are protected from health threats, and have access to quality, evidence based cost-effective health services. The evidence from a true and honest comprehensive health impact assessment will show that industrial gas drilling, to be incompatible with that vision," said Mary Menapace, a registered nurse.

The DEC has been reviewing draft hydrofracking regulations for several years. Governor Cuomo has said no final decisions have been made on drilling.
