Injured officer to be released from hospital

ITHACA, N.Y. -- One week after being shot during a pursuit, Ithaca Police Officer Anthony Augustine is expected to be released from the hospital. The police department said Augustine is scheduled to go home sometime Thursday morning.

He was shot in the upper chest while chasing a man suspected of stealing a vehicle last Thursday night. The suspect, Jamel Booker, 22, is in custody, and is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, and criminal use of a firearm.

Officer Augustine underwent two surgeries, and earlier in the week suffered a minor stroke while in the hospital. The stroke reportedly caused some impairment to his vision and affected some function in his arm and hand, but Augustine has been cleared to continue his recovery at home.
