Syracuse University and Syracuse Police are working as a team to ensure the well-being of students and others. It's a new initiative that comes on the heels of recent violent events in and around the campus. One thing students and the community will notice is more officers on patrol. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- This was the scene a week ago at the Carrier Dome. A stabbing took place during the men's basketball Orange Madness event. This and other recent incidents have forged a new partnership between SU's Department of Public Safety and the city Police Department, called the University Area Crime-Control Team (UACT).

Syracuse University Chief of Public Safety Tony Callisto said, "A Syracuse Police Officer and a DPS Officer, assigned to each one of the extra patrols that will be on. They will be covering the area near campus."

That area includes Marshall Street and the East Neighborhood. These patrols will take place during key times: Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Since the start of the semester, there have been reports of robberies and assaults, almost all involved people not affiliated with the school.

"That's certainly what the trend has been,” Callisto added. “The difference this year has been the attempts or admissions into the parties or activities."

There are hundreds of cameras in and around the university area and they're monitored 24 hours a day. If something unusual is spotted an officer is dispatched to that area.

On nights the crime control team is working, there will be an additional dispatcher responsible for monitoring cameras on the outskirts of campus. People visiting the campus for events at the Dome will also see some changes.

All events there will require assigned seat tickets. Sales and distribution will be determined and handled by Carrier Dome Management and that Management will enforce enhanced security procedures including metal detectors and other measures.

It’s a proactive approach all around. An approach they believe will ensure the safety of all those who come to the area.

Officers will be paid from SU's public safety budget. This new initiative is on a trial basis through November. At that time campus and Syracuse Police will assess its impact.
