CANASTOTA, N.Y. -- Hundreds of people showed up to help a little girl trying to recover from a severe head injury.

Emily Simmons was involved in a devastating crash in May of 2012. She spent most of the summer at Golisano Children's hospital, but was able to return home to a big celebration in Canastota last month, where she has continued therapy at home.

Now, the Canastota community is coming together to help the family. Sunday, people took part in a benefit dinner at the Rusty Rail.

Organizers say her recovery is remarkable.

"There's not really a word to put with it. If you saw Em a couple months ago and you saw Em now, you can't put a word to what it is to see her walking around having a good time here," said Organizer Lisa Picciano.

The money raised is being used to help with the large medical expenses the family has incurred.
