CENTRAL NEW YORK -- It’s a big endorsement for one of the Congressional candidates in the 24th district. The New York Times is throwing its weight behind Democrat challenger Dan Maffei. He is running against Republican Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle and the Green Party's Ursula Rozum.
The newspaper's biggest issue in the campaign was the environment. The Times editorial board wrote that Maffei is a lawyer whose reasonable views include a far better record on the environment. Writers also said that Buerkle was named to the "Flat Earth Five" by the League of Conservation Voters for denying the existence of global warming.
YNN will be carrying a debate for the 24th Congressional race, in conjunction with the Campbell Public Affairs Institute at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School. Maffei has elected not to take part in that debate, citing concerns about the format. However, a podium will be set up for him should he change his mind. You can watch it live on Monday, October 29 at 7 p.m.
