JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- A meeting was held in Jefferson County over a wind energy project that has divided the community. BP Wind Energy was recently reprimanded by the state public service commission for not reaching out to Cape Vincent residents with their plans for a wind farm.
So Tuesday night, the corporation was at a community meeting with a revised plan for a 124-turbine project in the town. BP presented a plan it's submitting to the state, which allows a sitting board to override local zoning laws in approving large power projects.
The plan doesn't follow any of the recently enacted zoning law regulations, a situation that has angered board members.
"Well I've come to the understanding that BP would like to go through the process of article ten, he will listen or excuse me, they will listen to what we would like them to hear but they won’t necessarily take it and digest it and do anything with it except go with their own agenda," said John Burns, Cape Vincent Town Council.
"We're really excited about the project we're interested in remaining engaged and look forward to working out way through the article ten permit process," said Richard Chandler, BP Director of Business Development.
Tuesday night's meeting was the first of several planned between BP and the town councils.
