SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- People are bringing fresh vegetables to Syracuse's Southside. Community gardens were being built along Bellevue Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

The raised beds will be available to people in the neighborhood and community organizations. The gardens will also do more than just cultivate healthy foods.

"This was all vacant properties before this was developed. So we've taken a site that was really an eyesore to the community, we're making it a place that people want to come be at. It's much more attractive to look at vegetables and flowers growing," said Jessi Lyons, Cornell Cooperative Extension.

This is the second year that the Cornell Cooperative Extension has worked with the community gardens.
