DEWITT, N.Y. -- The conflict in Syria and cyber warfare were hot topics for Onondaga County teens this weekend. Hundreds of students got together to kick off the Central New York Model UN season.

Seven schools participated in the all-day event at Manlius Pebble Hill. Students acted as delegates from different countries as they talk about issues that are up for discussion at the actual United Nations. Teens say they get a lot out of the experience.

"My co-Secretary General and I had to set the whole thing up, so we have these managerial and leadership skills that we've developed. Furthermore, we just like to give people an enriching environment in which they can debate these topics," said Aurek Ransom, MPH senior and co-Secretary General.

Organizers said spreading awareness of current events to fellow students is also a goal.
