SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It was a perfect storm for grocery shopping. Thousands in Syracuse hit the aisles of a new store on Sunday to prepare for Sandy and celebrate a grand opening.
PriceRite opened its doors at the corner of Erie Boulevard East and Teall Avenue. This is the first store that the chain has opened in Central New York. The supermarket employs 130 people.
The chain said it limits advertising and doesn't print coupons in an effort to keep prices low. Owners said they have gotten a warm welcome from the neighborhood.
"They're very appreciative. You know, it's a big walking area. A lot of people are saying, 'Oh, this is going to make my life so much easier, I don't have to get on a bus. I can just walk a couple of blocks over and come to the store'," noted Kevin George, PriceRite Regional Director.
PriceRite came just in time. The store will be extending its hours until 10:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday nights to allow extra time to shop before Sandy hits.
