NEW YORK – President Barack Obama has declared a federal emergency in the state of New York. This move authorizes federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts during Sandy.
The President's action also authorizes FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts throughout all of New York's counties. Relief efforts include identifying, mobilizing and providing equipment and resources necessary to help during an emergency.
"My main message to everybody involved is that we have to take this seriously. The federal government is working effectively with the state and local governments. It's going to be very important that populations in all the affected states take this seriously, listen to your state and local elected officials. My message to the governors, as well as to the mayors, anything you need, we will be there," said President Obama.
The President also signed declarations for several other states including Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
