Rain and wind from Hurricane Sandy is likely to begin moving through the region as early as this afternoon. Government officials and first responders up and down the East Coast are making preparations. BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Broome County officials have been working throughout the weekend in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. County Executive Debbie Preston and Emergency Services Director Brett Chellis have been checking in with state and municipal leaders to make sure everyone knows what actions may need to be taken throughout the next few days.

County officials have also spoken with local hospitals to ensure they are prepared for lengthy power outages. Leaders have also met with NYSEG to coordinate quick response times for downed trees and power lines as well the deployment of bottled water and dry ice for residents.

Representatives from the Red Cross are ready to operate shelters if necessary.

Governor Cuomo has sent 200 National Guard troops to the Southern Tier along with water tankers, chainsaws, and 3,000 meals. Emergency Services Personnel say that with the state's help they feel they will be ready for whatever this storm brings.

"We've been directly in contact with his emergency management staff right through and how well he's managed his emergency approach in the state, that they are being a help to the counties, and really at this point I feel at this point we're well prepared," said Brett Chellis, Emergency Services Director.

Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy is scheduled to meet with Broome County officials and first responders at 10:30 a.m. He will give an update on the status of Sandy preparations at that time.
