Two police officers were shot and a suspect dead. It was the end result of a call to Binghamton police Sunday in the Days Inn parking lot. Monday, new details emerged about the suspect and the shootout police say he caused.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- It was a little after 2 a.m. Sunday when police received calls about a man harassing staff at the Days Inn Hotel in Binghamton and later a call about a gunshot. Those calls resulted in a deadly shootout.

"We did find one casing away from the scene. We don’t know why. We’re still trying to track that down. He fired a shot before we arrived,” said Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski.

Police found Oklahoma-native Michael Eugene Spohn, 40, in the parking lot. They say he shot at them and they returned fire. Twelve officers were on scene and fired more than 100 rounds. Spohn only had three rounds in his weapon, something the Binghamton Police Chief says may have been intentional.

"Who knows? Maybe this guy intend for what happened to happen,” said Zikuski. “You don’t get into a gun fight with the police with three bullets. It’s usually not going to work out."

Police say Spohn had a blood alcohol content of .26 and was carrying a semi-automatic weapon that he did not have a New York state permit for. He checked into the hotel on September 27th and was in the area working as a welder for a natural gas company.

"What lead to the shooting and what was going through his mind, we don’t know. But when someone fires at officers, this is what happens,” said Zikuski.

Zikuski says they don’t know which officer delivered the fatal shot. Two officers sustained injuries during the shootout. Sgt. Craig Follett was hit in the leg and Sgt. Larry Hendrickson was hit on the hand and arm. Both received treatment and released.
