SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Students at Syracuse University had an unexpected day off Tuesday in the wake of Sandy, but despite the mild conditions at school, it was still a very stressful storm.
Many of SU's students are from the New York City and New Jersey areas. Some students say they were anxious knowing their families could have been in harm's way. Now as the cleanup begins, they wish they could be at home to help loved ones pick up the pieces.
"My back yard got torn up. My garage got uprooted from the ground and it found my pool,” said Dave Cholish, who is from Long Valley, New Jersey.”We got pounded. That's the only way to put it."
"You don't know if they're okay. You don't know if they need anything. I'm really close with my family. I come from a small family, so not being there with them was kinda hard for me, but I definitely made sure I was texting them and calling them to make sure they were okay," said Nikki Jett-El, who is from Philadelphia.
Classes are scheduled to resume at SU Wednesday morning.
