POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Brandon Mendelson isn't your typical college student. What put's him at the front of the class? He's a critically-acclaimed author. His message? "Social media is B.S."
"I was looking for jobs, couldn't find anything and I fell really into this whole social media world," said Brandon Mendelson, author of "Social Media is B.S."
After a couple years, Mendelson realized something was wrong.
"I bought the hype. I tried all the myths and I got into it and nothing worked," said Mendelson.
Mendelson decided the problem wasn't him, but social media itself. He spent three years researching social media and its relationship with small businesses. Mendelson ended up authoring a book.
"People really seem to like it," said Mendelson.
The book thrusted Brandon into the national spotlight. He recently appeared on CNN and CNBC. Now he is moving forward, coming back to SUNY Potsdam this fall, using his time on campus to do research for a movie.
"I had an idea for a movie called 'Old Man on Campus,' because members of my generation are coming back, we have our degrees, finding there is no jobs across the nation, we're universally coming back to college campuses," said Mendelson.
Mendelson says his recent fame hasn't gotten in the way of his work
“Being at Potsdam, no one cares and that's the best thing ever. I can go and be on CNN and come back the next day and no one will ever know," said Mendelson.
Mendelson also has plans for another book. He wants to write a comedy about the world of online dating.
