FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Another Fort Drum-based unit has returned from a deployment in Afghanistan. The 7th Engineer Battalion held a ceremony at the Monti Fitness Center at Fort Drum on Thursday to officially recognize their return.

The Battalion's units had been previously deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010. The entire Battalion deployed in 2011 to Regional Command East as the core of Task Force Red Devils. According to the Battalion's commander, the engineers were involved in work on the Salang Tunnel. The tunnel is part of the main supply route into Eastern Afghanistan through the Hindu Kush Mountains.

"We did infrastructure construction, we improved roads, the Salang Tunnel mission, we improved the Salang Tunnel network up at the tunnel to get it through the winter. The road was failing so one of our missions, we had soldiers up there and that was at 11,000 feet to repair that network and that tunnel structure, the road network," said Mark Quander, Battalion Commander LTC.

During the ceremony, six soldiers were honored with two Bronze Stars and four Army Accommodation Medals for bravery in three separate engagements.
