Effort to promote Syracuse in Canada

Destiny USA and Onondaga County's tourism promotion agency officials are working to attract more Canadian visitors to Syracuse. Representatives from the mall and the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau want to increase incoming sales from outside the border. Our Brad Vivacqua has the story.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Believe it or not, officials say about 12 to 15 percent of annual purchases at Destiny right now are made by shoppers from Canada. While officials say that number is good, there's a push to bring even more Canadian shoppers to the popular growing destination.

Members of the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau recently joined Destiny officials at two events in both Ontario and Ottawa. Officials say Canadians are already attracted to Destiny because it offers affordable unique merchandise.

Now, with more entertainment and dining venues, that can only help.

Here's a look at what the agencies are doing to better promote both Destiny and the city to shoppers north of the border. There will be a pitch to more Canadian media outlets about new developments. There will be an increased presence of billboards, and additional advertising in Canada. More social media efforts will be used to bring guests to Syracuse.

"We've got to make certain that we're exposing them to all the different changes that are taking place there. So building the awareness, building the information. Getting our product into their faces, is the only way we're going to be able to do that," said David Holder, Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau President.

In addition to Destiny, more promotions are underway for other destinations including downtown shops, theatres, and the zoo.

Holder says additional visitors in the area can only lead to a better economy that can create additional revenue and more jobs.
