SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Dan Maffei will be returning to the House of Representatives. In a rematch of a race two years ago, the democrat knocked off Republican incumbent Ann Marie Buerkle and Green Party candidate Ursula Rozum.
The race was hotly contested with millions of dollars of ads being poured into the campaigns.
Democrats and Republican national committees both fought hard to win the race. The few debates between Maffei and Buerkle were just as heated.
Tuesday night, the candidates thanked their supporters.
"When you lose a race like we did two years ago, and it’s that close and all that other stuff, you learn the people who are not with you and you learn who your real friends are. And ladies and gentlemen, tonight I’m surrounded by my real friends," Maffei said.
Buerkle said, "I just want to say thank you to all of you. For all you do for our community, for our nation and for our Republican Party."
In 2010, Buerkle defeated Maffei by a razor thin margin. He called himself Central New York's comeback kid during his victory speech.
