TORONTO -- Longtime Sabres broadcaster Rick Jeanneret was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on Monday. He received the 2012 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award.

The award was given by the NHL Broadcasters Association to recognize members of the radio and television industry who have made outstanding contributions to the game during their career.

Jeanneret said he is happy his family could be part of the event, including his 92-year-old mother.

"When all this started, and it started with the Sabres Hall of Fame, it was Mike Gilbert who talked me into it. Because I was going to wait until my career was over before I allowed my name to be nominated for any of the halls," said Jeanneret. "Once I sat down and talked to him, and we talked about my mother, and thought that maybe we should do this while she's still around and she can still appreciate it."

Jeanneret is the longest tenured play-by-play announcer in the NHL.
