OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- The FitzPatrick nuclear plant in Scriba remains offline, following a fire this past weekend.

The flames broke out just before 6 a.m. on Sunday inside one of the plant's main transformers.

The facility has two transformers that take the energy produced by the generator, step up the voltage, then send it out to the electrical grid.

On-site firefighters put the fire out just after 6:30 a.m. As a result, the reactor automatically shut down.

Officials say the transformer cannot be repaired. They will use a spare they have on site or bring in another. But the fix could be complicated.

"It's not as simple as just swapping the two units out,” said Tammy Holden, Entergy Spokesperson. “Modifications need to be made to the one that we have or another one, if we were to secure one, before it can be put in."

The incident resulted in an unusual event being declared, which is the lowest of four emergency classifications used at nuclear plants.

The public was never in danger.

It is unclear when the necessary changes will be made and the plant brought back online.
