SYRACUSE, N.Y. — It's become a holiday tradition in Syracuse: helping to make Thanksgiving dinner possible for hundreds of community members.

The line stretched down the block from River of Life Church on James Street for its annual turkey give-away. Every year, the church provides 500 turkeys to community members in need.

Some of those who took part say even with help such as food stamps, the holiday would be much more bleak without the extra help.

"I have three people in my home, and what they give me for one month, I'm lucky if I could feed us three in two weeks, so actually, for the last two weeks of the month, we're practically starving," said Bobbie Jo Richardson. "If it wasn't for this turkey today, I don't think we would've had a turkey for Thanksgiving."

The program director says it's made possible through the help of fundraisers, grants, and the generosity of the Super Walmart in Central Square.
