Father accused of killing son in 2008

SENECA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Seneca County man has been arrested for the 2008 death of his son and authorities are investigating to see if he's also responsible for the death of his first wife.

Karl Karlsen, 52, of Romulus, has been charged with second degree murder for the death of Levi Karlsen, 23, on November 20th, 2008. Seneca County Sheriff's deputies initially believed Levi Karlsen was killed in an accident when he was trapped underneath a vehicle he had been working on. But last March, they learned Karl Karlsen had taken out a substantial life insurance policy on his son days before the incident.

After investigating more, deputies believe Karlsen is responsible for the vehicle falling on his son. They say he left the scene for several hours, pretended to discover the accident and acted distraught to fool authorities.

Karlsen is being held in the Seneca County Jail without bail.

Authorities are now also looking into the 1991 fire in California that claimed the life of Karlsen’s first wife. The sheriff says there are circumstances surrounding her death that raise concern.
