UNITED STATES -- The former Fort Drum soldier charged with giving thousands of classified documents to the website WikiLeaks is expected to testify this week.

The pre-trial hearing for Private First Class Bradley Manning began Tuesday on Fort Meade in Maryland. His lawyers want all charges dropped because they claim Manning was illegally punished by being locked up alone in a small cell for nearly nine months and having to sleep naked on several occasions.

The military says his treatment at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Virginia was appropriate because he's a risk to injure himself or others.

Manning faces life in prison if convicted.

The hearing is expected to run through Sunday.
