ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Solvay middle schoolers got a real life social studies lesson. Veterans talked to the kids about their experiences in war for Take a Veteran to School Day.

The school held an assembly Thursday morning for more than 300 sixth through eighth graders. Veterans of all ages came for the event.

The band and chorus also took part in the assembly to perform special songs for the veterans.

School officials say this is an exciting experience for all of the students and faculty involved.

"You can sense that they know that this is something a little different and going to be a little special. We have a lot of assemblies, but to have people coming in from generations and generations of military, I think they're really excited about it," said DeeDee Hagemann, Solvay Middle School Principal.

The Take a Veteran to School Day event is sponsored by the History Channel and is being done across the country.

Time Warner Cable and Assemblyman Magnarelli partnered with the History Channel and the school for this event.
