SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Hydrofracking experts and concerned groups got the chance to voice their opinions on the latest development on New York's fracking future Friday.
Syracuse University hosted a debate between pro and anti-fracking groups. They discussed the latest proposed regulations released by the Department of Environmental Conservation Thursday. The DEC has postponed its finalized regulations until a state health study can be completed. However, opponents of hydrofracking say it was still premature to release any new regulations.
“We're a little concerned that they've got the cart before the horse in releasing these regulations before the health experts have given them their take,” said Paul Gallay, President of Hudson River Keepers.
“The governor requested an independent medical review of the health findings of the generic impact statement, and they just did not finish their review, so the DEC has asked for and has been granted a 90 day extension,” said Edward Hinchey, Geologist.
The debate also discussed a proposal for the state assembly to come out against fracking.
