SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Kids in Syracuse got some help with their holiday shopping from men and women in uniform.

The Syracuse police and fire departments teamed up for the "Shop with a Cop" program Saturday morning. The officers and firefighters took 20 kids around Destiny USA to find the perfect gifts for their families or themselves.

The kids were all given a $100 gift card, along with a pizza lunch and a movie ticket.

"It's a special time of the year and it's a time of giving. So this is a great opportunity for us to touch the hearts of young people outside the normal performance of our duty," said Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler.

"There's a couple of lucky kids here today who are going to have a pretty good memory of being with Santa, being in the mall," said Syracuse Fire Chief Mark McLees.

All the kids who took part were selected from referrals by police officers who met them throughout the year.
