SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The planned merger between Alliance Bank and NBT Bank could lead to nearly 100 layoffs in Onondaga and Madison counties. The banks are set to merge, pending government and shareholder approval, this coming March.

Friday, Alliance notified employees that 42 positions at its Syracuse headquarters and 56 positions at its operations center in Oneida could be eliminated. Alliance says the actual number of layoffs is not set yet, and they will try to find other positions in the company for affected employees.

NBT Bank is based out of Norwich in Chenango County.
