Syracuse man falls down mountainside

By: Web Staff

ESSEX COUNTY, N.Y. -- An incredible rescue effort saved a Syracuse man after he tumbled down a mountain in the Adirondacks.

The DEC says Calum Stewart, 41, was hiking Saturday afternoon with three others when he fell 150 feet down Nippletop Mountain. One of the hikers stayed with the man while others looked for help.

Low clouds kept the state police helicopter on the ground. Forest rangers, firefighters and search and rescue teams used high angle rope rescue techniques to get Stewart down.

Stewart was taken to Elizabethtown Hospital.
