BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- The gym can be a very hectic place right after the holidays with scores of people tackling their New Year’s resolutions and if you’re not good at running or don’t feel like waiting for equipment, you may want to try something new.
“A lot of times you get into a rut from doing the same thing over and over again and your body will adapt to that and it’s great to try different things you haven’t done because you’ll work your muscles different,” said CJ Michalak, Inspire Fitness Trainer.
Fitness experts say don’t limit yourself to the machines you’re familiar with. They suggest trying group-friendly equipment and classes such as zumba, yoga or suspension training.
“You can do every exercise and reach every muscle group,” said Trish O’Neill, Inspire Fitness Co-owner and Trainer. “A beginning person and an advanced person can do the same exercise at the same time, someone just has more suspension than the other.”
Andrea Vaioli, a Binghamton resident, added, “I think some of the intimidation people have is that they don’t know what to do, but you’re doing whatever they’re showing you at your own pace. It’s not a competition.”
Michalak said, “A lot of times in class, the instructor will say, ‘Do four more,’ but if you’re by yourself, you might not do those four more.”
Trainers say having variety in your workout routine and being social at the gym can help you stick with your fitness goals.
"You have a trainer there that’s going to motivate you to do more, push you and you'll do more than you thought you could,” said Michalak. “Plus having people with you, you get to talk with each other, workout, push each other and it's just fun to have someone working out with you rather than being alone with headphones in, listening to music."
But if you’re still nervous about trying new things this New Year, try bringing a friend along for support and motivation.
