For many, New Year's Day is a time to recover from the holidays, but others took advantage of their last day off by hitting the slopes, at ski resorts throughout New York State, including Greek Peak. And as our Candace Hopkins reports, they were a welcome sight, as the resort tries to bounce back after declaring bankruptcy last year.

CORTLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Despite the frigid temperatures, many skiers and riders hit the slopes Tuesday night, taking advantage of the last day before heading back to work and school.

"Today was just one of those days when I knew I needed to get out here, so I made the effort, and I'm here, and I had a great day," said skier Thomas Mitchell.

Greek Peek opened up on December 1st. Staff say after last year's weak ski season this year couldn't come fast enough.

"The skiers and boarders have had some pent up demand, after a year like last year, to get any kind of snowfall, they were really excited to get out on the slopes," said Greek Peak's Vice President of Operations Wesley Kryger.

Greek Peak staff welcomed last week's snowstorm with open arms. They got about 18 inches, and they say that snow immediately reignited their customers desires to get back on the slopes.

"The best advertising that there is, is Mother Nature putting a couple inches of snow in people's backyard and then they remember that they enjoy skiing and riding, and that there is snow at the mountain and they come out and enjoy," said Kryger.

Resorts make about one third of their profits for the entire season during winter vacation. And this year Greek Peak needs to have an especially strong season, after filing for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy last year.

"With the re-organization we continue to work with the FDIC to come up with solutions to the re-organization, so we're working together so hopefully by springtime we'll have a solution but it is a process," said Kryger.

In the meantime, nearly all of Greek Peak's trails and lifts are open, and conditions are ideal, putting the resort on the right track.
