It's that time of year again. If you're looking to get rid of your Christmas tree, you're encouraged to recycle it. And if you live in Onondaga County, you can drop your tree off at one of a few compost sites until January 12th. Our Brad Vivacqua has more from the newsroom.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Now that the holidays are over, you may still be looking at your Christmas tree asking yourself, how am I going to get rid of my tree? The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency wants to help and is reminding you of its free tree recycling program.

From now through January 12th, people living in Onondaga County can drop off their trees at either the Amboy or Jamesville compost site. OCRRA officials say many Onondaga County communities have pickup dates, but for others, it's easier to drop trees off.

You're asked to get everything off the tree, such as tinsel and ornaments, before you drop it off. The trees will be turned to mulch and OCRRA officials say this can help the environment. The mulch will again be available for gardening in the Spring.

Beginning today, OCRRA's compost sites will be open for tree dropoff Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can also drop off your trees on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

OCRRA anticipates between 15,000 and 20,000 trees will be dropped off and recycled at the sites. Remember, only real trees will be accepted.
