SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse Police say the homicide that took place on New Year’s Eve, started off as an attempted robbery.

Fred Burgess Jr., 34, is accused of trying to rob 30-year-old David Jones Jr., while he was sitting in his SUV around 11:30 p.m. Monday on West Onondaga Street. They say a struggle ensued and Burgess shot Jones. Jones was pronounced dead at Upstate University Hospital that night.

Police say they are still looking for information on the murder.

"Even though we made an arrest in this case, as usual, we continue our investigation because we don't want to leave any stone unturned. We want to make sure that we prepare a solid case against our suspect here and to make sure justice is done on behalf of our victim,” said Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler.

Burgess was arraigned and charged with murder, attempted robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

It is unclear if he knew the victim, but police do say he has an extensive criminal history, which includes prior felony convictions.
