SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A new health care center opened in Syracuse to serve patients with little to no health insurance.

Christian Health Services on Burnet Avenue in Syracuse offers primary health care for Medicaid, Medicare, uninsured and underinsured patients. The health care center was built by volunteers. Each worker is also a volunteer, except for two doctors.

Officials with the center say being volunteer driven really helps to reduce fees so they can make health care affordable. They say the people they treat are often those who don't have a primary care doctor, but go to the emergency room for all their family's health care needs.

"That's really all that they know. That's all they've been exposed to and when you begin to explain to them that, no, you can have a family doctor that you could call at anytime about your sick child and that doctor knows you, knows your husband, knows your children. It's a completely different experience for all those people," said Executive Director Gary Maderi.

Talks of opening this center began about three years ago.
